Workshop with the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family in Ružomberok, Slovakia

In October 2025, a Destination Europe workshop was part of a two-day meeting focused on sharing experiences with the implementation of labour migration legislation and brought together participants from labour offices, their central office, the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family of the Slovak Republic, and the IOM Migration Information Centre.

Interactive workshop on migration

During the role-playing activity, participants took on the roles of policymakers at the EU, national, and local level. They discussed possible migration and integration measures, debated their priorities, and made collective decisions on which policies to implement. Through this process, participants experienced the complexity of migration governance, including the need to balance humanitarian, social, and economic considerations while taking into account the perspectives of different actors.

Feedback from participants

After the workshop, one of the aspects participants reflected on was Yulia’s (one of the migrant personas included in the learning tool) vulnerability – her difficult position within the migration process and how decisions made at different levels, despite their best intentions, did not bring the wished outcome in her situation.

Participants discussed how the intended goals of migration and integration policies do not always translate into the expected outcomes, showing the complexity of policymaking.
