On 25 April 2025, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), as the coordinator of the European Migration Network (EMN) in Slovakia, organized a thematic workshop titled “On the Road to Understanding Migration.” The workshop was delivered to teachers, educational staff, and youth workers who teach or work with young people aged 16 and older. Its aim was to provide participants with tools and methods for effective discussions on migration, and to introduce the interactive EMN educational tool Destination Europe.
During the workshop, participants gained a deeper understanding of key terms and concepts related to migration, debunked common myths, explored current migration trends in Slovakia and worldwide, and experienced several engaging activities on migration topics. As part of the Destination Europe educational role-play activity, participants took on the roles of various stakeholders involved in migration policymaking, such as ministers, mayors, or representatives of non-governmental organizations. They had to consider the impacts that their decisions would have on migrants and local communities.

Participants appreciated the interactive nature of the workshop, which gave them the opportunity to practically try out activities they can use in their work with young people. In their feedback, they shared that the workshop helped them better understand migration-related concepts and provided inspiration for educational activities. The Destination Europe activity was particularly well-received, with participants valuing both the chance to experience it firsthand and the guidance on how to facilitate it themselves.
